The Snow and Ice Climbing course is for those with previous winter climbing experience who would like to improve their skills, learn new techniques and tackle harder routes.

Participants on this course should have

  • Completed climbs of Scottish grade II and III on a previous climbing course, or the equivalent.
  • Participants on this course climb on Scottish grade III to IV ground. Please note that climbs tackled include a mix of 'snow and ice' and 'mixed' or 'buttress' routes.

Outline Programme

Day 1:The course begins at 6 p.m. on Sunday evening with the Course Briefing. The briefing covers essential information for the following day and we discuss the week ahead and sort out the relevant personal kit and group equipment.
Day 2:The intention is to make the best of the winter conditions available and to do a route during the first full day. We refresh basic skills, especially ice-axe arrest and avalanche assessment.
Day 3-6:For the whole week we find and climb the routes best suited to the individual student's ability. We also offer as wide a variety of climbing as possible, from pure ice to mixed buttress routes. Throughout the week, we focus on efficient, effective and safe ropework and climbing techniques. Full consideration is given to all the other essential winter skills, which contribute to achieving that special feeling associated with an exciting winter ascent. We are within easy reach of all the major Scottish ice climbing venues, such as Glencoe, Ben Nevis, Aonach Mor, Aonach Beag and Creag Meagaidh. The Cairngorms are also within daily reach if the East offers better conditions.

Typical routes might include:

  • Crowberry Gully, Buchaille Etive Mor (III/IV)
  • Twisting Gully, Stob Coire Nan Lochan (II/III)
  • The Screen, West Face Aonach Dubh (IV)
  • Tower Ridge, Ben Nevis (III)
  • The Curtain, Ben Nevis
  • SC Gully, Stob Coire Nan Lochan
  • Eastern Corner, Creag Meagaidh
