Winter Mountaineering is the first choice for those who aspire to get onto graded climbs. You may have done an introductory style course before or already have basic winter skills, but this course is for anyone who wants to climb in winter. The course begins with some general mountaineering, with the focus swiftly changing to climbing named routes of grade I, II and III.

The instruction centres on the use of ropes and establishing safe belays to allow participants to do their own climbing in the future. The course also provides excellent technical preparation for Grade 2 and 3 expeditions.

Outline Programme

Day 1:The course begins at 6 p.m. on Sunday evening with the Course Briefing. The briefing covers essential information for the following day and we discuss the week ahead and sort out the relevant personal kit and group equipment.
Day 2:A refresher day covering the basic skills necessary for safe climbing in Scotland in winter. These include ice axe arrests, snow and ice belays, ropework and avalanche safety.
Day 3-4:Grade I and II ascents. General mountaineering days.
