News for August 2008
Muztag Ata (21st Aug)
And to keep the news rolling, we had a satellite telephone call from Muztag Ata expedition leader Andy Chapman earlier this week.
Andy's team had been to camp 2 to acclimatise before resting in base camp. All were fit and well and looking forward to reaching the top. But heavy snow made it impossible to go higher than camp 2 after they climbed back there in readiness for the summit. So, unfortunately, due to the risk of avalanche and the shear hardship of ploughing through deep snow, they all descended safely to base camp and are now on their way back back home. Muztag Ata team ready for summit push (11th Aug)
Expedition leader, Andy Chapman just called in from Muztag Ata base camp in the Chinese Pamirs. On Saturday night, all 11 members of the expedition slept in Camp 2 (6,100m), with our High Altitude Porters establishing Camp 3 at 6,800m. Andy reports that the mountain is fairly quiet, with twelve tents counted at camp 2, belonging to the Jagged Globe team and a mix of Australian, German and Austrian teams.
The plan now is to have a couple of days rest in base camp, before moving on up on Wednesday, with the aim of attempting the summit on Saturday (16 Aug). The weather has been a little bit unsettled, but everyone is feeling fairly healthy and so they are crossing their fingers for the latter half of the week. We wish them the very best of luck!
