Ecuador successes for August team

(25th Aug)

[Above the clouds on Cotopaxi, the highest active volcano in the world, 18 kb]Our head guide in Ecuador, Javier Herrera reports: "Just a quick note to inform you that all our 14 members summited Pasochoa 4,200m, Pichincha 4,787m and Iliniza North 5,125! On Iliniza North we had a nice day, though it was windy. For some of the team members it was their first high altitude test, with almost everyone reacting fine to the altitude. After two well-earned rest days where we visited Otavalo Market, we went to Cayambe (Ecuador's 3rd highest peak) for a Glacier school practice. On 14 August we made our summit attempt and 10 of the team made it to the top. After spending two nights in some nice old Haciendas we attempted Cotopaxi and here, 9 members reached the summit. We spent almost one hour enjoying the views from the top of most of the peaks of Ecuador.

It was a great expedtion with a very motivated group!"

Our next expedition to Ecuador departs on 1 November and still has a few places available... [read more about Ecuador Volcanoes]

We'll post more as it comes. The expedition comprises 14 members, plus leader, Tim Calder and assistant leaders, Chris Groves and Andy Chapman. [read more about Cho Oyu]

12 out of 12 on Monta Rosa, 6 out of 6 on Mont Blanc

(21st Aug)

[The Bosses Ridge on the Gouter Route (www2), 2 kb]Wow - what a superb few days in the Alps on our Zermatt 4,000ers course and on Mont Blanc! All 12 members of this week's Zermatt course reached the summit of Monta Rosa on the Dufourspitze - at 4,634m, the highest point entirely within Switzerland. They were climbing with Richard Dupont, Paul Farmer, Dylan Taylor, Rob Jarvis, Eric Balet and Raoul Crettenand. Over on Mont Blanc, we had six people summit, following on from their Haute Route trip with Jim Kerr. So Jim, David Vallet and Tim Blakemore were guiding on that one. Congratulations to all those taking part and we're looking forward to more great results in the rest of the season! [read more about Zermatt 4000ers]

Success on Kilimanjaro

(20th Aug)

[Baranco Camp 3,900m below the southern aspect of Kilimanjaro, 5 kb]Nine members of Tom Briggs' 8 August Kilimanjaro - Lemosho Glades trek reached the summit of The Roof of Africa at 0705 on Saturday 15 August. The team enjoyed the trek via the Lemosho Glades route, through the lower forest zone, up onto the Shira Plateau. From here, they climbed to an initial high point of 4,650m at Lava Tower, before dropping back down to Baranco camp site. Through the swirling mists, they had susperb views of the Baranco Wall and Western Breach in the evening sunlight. The following day they tackled a busy Baranco Wall, with Ali overcoming some of her fears on the tricky steps lower on the wall. After a night at Karanga Camp, it was a short day to Barafu and the launch pad for the summit. The team opted for an early start, as the temperatures were reasonably warm. After 7 hours, nine members of the group made Uhuru Peak (5,895m), the highest point in Africa. Thanks go out to our wonderful Tanzanian staff of porters, cooks, camp crew and guides, for making the experience special for us all. [read more about Kilimanjaro - Lemosho Glades]

If you are considering attempting North America's highest mountain, then please contact either Adele or Tom at the Jagged Globe office, both of whom have climbed to the top and can advise you about everything you need to know. Denali is not a technical climb, but it is a cold mountain, and due to there being no porterage, you need to carry everything for 3 weeks.
