Cho Oyu 2005

Despatches from this expedition [get by email]

01:00 28th April (GMT) - Team back up to C1 and C2

Tashi just called in from Cho Oyu base camp. The team have been up to Camp 1 and plan to go up again tomorrow (29 Apr) to sleep, before heading on up to 'tag' Camp 2 on 1 or 2 May. They will then descend back to base camp to rest on the 3/4/5 May in the hope that they get a good forecast for a summit bid around the 9/10 May.

The weather today in base camp is miserable, with a lot of snow. Tashi reports that the jet stream is overhead, with strong winds high on the mountain and a lot of pecipitation. Since the first summits earlier in the week, the weather has been fairly unsettled, though there are reports of climbers hoping to go up and summit on 2 May.

We'll have another report around 4/5 May, when our guys return to BC, followint their acclimatisation climb.

01:00 15th April (GMT) - Team acclimatise around Nylam

Hi and greetings from Nyalam from the Jagged Globe Cho Oyu expedition. We arrived yesterday at 1pm from Xangmu, it was a great drive and all the climbers are well and have settled to the fresh mountain air. All is well and healthy. Today we hiked up to the mountain top of Nyalam at 4,000m and enjoyed great views of Sishapangma, another big 8000er in tibet. The weather has been very kind to us, with clear blue skies but strong winds up at 6,000m.

We head to Tingri tomorrow where we will stay for 2 days to acclimatise at 4,500m, before then heading to Chinese base camp and then onwards to our Advance Base Camp on Cho Oyu. There are lots of climbers on Cho Oyu this spring season, about 25 expeditions all together.

Everyone sends their regards, Ian, Emille and Michele are all doing well and getting used to the altitude. Our Sherpa crew of five are also doing well. Pema, Wangdi, Pasang, Nima our cook and Dil, our cook assistant are also well and healthy.

Best wishes to all

Tashi, Expeditions leader.

About this Expedition

In Spring 2005, Jagged Globe has a small team of climbers from Australia and the Netherlands, led by Tashi Tenzing. Tashi, the grandson of Tenzing Norgay, lives in Sydney, Australia and frequently leads expeditions to Antarctica, where he has worked as a Guide on past Jagged Globe expeditions. He has summited Everest twice. Our climbers will be sending in updates throughout the second half of April and May, with details of their ascent.
