Carstensz PyramidTrip ReportsJagged Globe has a long history of climbing Carstensz, since 1994. We have now organised 10 expeditions to the mountain, most of which have been different in some way. Carstensz Pyramid is located next to the Freeport Mine in West Papua and is notoriously difficult to access, due to restrictions through the mine and the politically sensitive nature of the surrounding area. In 2009, we aim to trek into base camp from Sugapa, the route we used on our first expedition. To join one of our expeditions, you need rock climbing experience to grade UK 'Hard Severe' (US 5.7) and you need to know how to jumar. Although there are fixed ropes on the route, the crux involves abseiling into and jumaring out of a notch on the ridge. Click to read details of the Carstensz Pyramid expedition.
