An expedition to climb peaks in an unspoilt range of the Indian Himalaya

Introduction

This is an expedition to a totally unspoilt range in Northern India, between Leh and the Nubra Valley. On our previous expeditions we climbed three new peaks in the Samdo Valley, two of which we named Mani Kangri (5,742m) and Yangchan Kangri (5,710m). We also made the first ascent of an attractive peak called Sahib Chasa (6,078m) and climbed another peak of around 5,700m. The aim of this expedition is to return to this wonderful area, acclimatise on some of the lower mountains and make an ascent of Sahib Chasa.

Join us on Nubra Summits

  • Exploratory mountaineering in a remote valley.
  • An opportunity to repeat a rarely-climbed 6,000m peak.
  • Jagged Globe leader, plus Nepalese Sherpas support the team.

Tailor Made Trips

We can organise this expedition on a ‘tailor-made’ private basis for groups of friends, families, clubs, charities or any other group. The cost of going private can be surprisingly reasonable. Please contact us to discuss the itinerary and your preferred dates. We will then send you a quote, with no obligation.

Experience Required

To join the Nubra Summits expedition and have a good chance of success on the peaks you will need:

  • A clean bill of health.
  • A good level of fitness for multiple tough days in the mountains.
  • Undertaken several Grade 1 scrambles, such as Striding Edge, Aonach Eagach or Grib Goch, in the normal course of your walking experience.
  • Scottish grade II/Alpine PD mountaineering experience.

Our Winter Mountaineering course in Scotland and our Alpine 4,000ers courses would provide good training for this expedition.

Itinerary

Here is an outline itinerary for this trip. A more detailed day-to-day itinerary is available as a downloadable PDF »

Outline Itinerary

Day 1 - 2:Fly to Delhi
Overnight hotel.
Day 3:Fly to Leh, the capital of Ladakh (3,350m)
Overnight hotel.
Day 4 - 5:Exploring the city of Leh
You will have two further nights in Leh to acclimatise, prior to making the big altitude climb over the Kardong La (5,375m). There is plenty to see in and around Leh, including the many fantastic monasteries that have existed here since the 11th Century. Overnight hotel.
Day 6:Travel from Leh to Hundur via the Kardong La (5,375m) and onwards to Skarchen (3,595m)
The drive over the Kardong La is an adventure in itself - some say it is the highest you can go by road anywhere in the world. After lunch in Hundur, you will begin trekking up the gorge to your first camp, at Skarchen (3,595m).
Day 7:Trek to Hundur Dok (4,020m)
It's a 3.5 hour walk to arrive in the wide-open glaciated valleys that typify this area. Here a delightful campsite on grassy terraces above the river provides a great base for tomorrow's acclimatisation day.
Day 8:Acclimatisation (4,020m)
Relax and visit the village for Yak tea, or take an acclimatisation walk further up the valley.
Day 9:Trek to camp in the Samdo Valley (4,700m)
Branch off the main route to the Lasermola La and trek up a wide open valley with Marmot and Yaks to a stunning campsite, after five hours.
Day 10:Short walk to Horse Lake (4,908m)
A 3 hour walk up to Horse Lake. Overnight camp.
Day 11:Move to base camp (5,095m)
A tough day carrying loads to base camp. 5 hours over lots of loose moraine.
Day 12 - 14:Ascents of Mani Kangri (5,792m) and Yagchan Kangri (5,710m)
You will have three days to explore the area and make ascents of these two excellent peaks.
Day 15 - 16:Trek to Doksa (4,665m)
Descend back down the Samdo Valley via a night at Horse Lake and trek around to Doksa.
Day 17:High camp on Sahib Chasa (5,095m)
It takes 2.5 - 3 hours to ascend to High Camp.
Day 18:Ascent of Sahib Chasa (6,078m)
Previous teams have taken between 7 and 8 hours to reach the summit of Sahib Chasa. From high camp steep scree leads to the glacier. Snow slopes give access to a headwall and a narrow summit ridge and the top. From the summit you will descend back to high camp and onwards to Doksa. A tough day!
Day 19 - 20:Cross the Lasermola La and return to Leh
The team will trek to a campsite below the pass at 5,120m, before crossing the following day to Morobuk village and the roadhead. Our vehicles will meet us and drive us back to Leh where you'll be settled into the hotel by late afternoon. Time to celebrate!
Day 21:Fly Leh to Delhi
Overnight hotel.
Day 22:Fly from Delhi to London

IMPORTANT NOTE: Every effort will be made to keep to the above itinerary, but as this is Adventure Travel in a remote mountain region, we cannot guarantee it. Weather conditions, road conditions, vehicle breakdowns, landslides, river crossings, the availability of horses and the health of climbers can all contribute to changes. The Expedition Leader and our local agent will try to ensure that the trip runs according to plan, but an easy going nature will be an asset!
