Trek to Everest Base Camp via 3 challenging high passes and 3 walkers' summits

Introduction

This is the ultimate Everest trekking experience for fit mountain walkers, crossing three high passes that are not on the standard Everest trail. These are the Renjo La (5,388m), Cho La (5,380m) and the Kongma La (5,535m). You will also ascend three walking peaks; Gokyo Ri (5,483m) and Kala Pattar (5,550m) offer superb views of Everest, whilst Chukkung Ri (5,550m) is a lesser-known summit, tucked under the imposing Lhotse-Nuptse wall.

What to expect

This is a tough and arduous trek, so you should be a fit hillwalker/hiker, used to long, consecutive days of walking steep, boulder-strewn paths where the use of hands has been essential to scramble upwards over rocky steps. As this route takes you over remote high passes, experience of having been to 5000-metres before is ideal, such as an ascent of Kilimanjaro.

Itinerary

Here is an outline itinerary for this trip. A more detailed day-to-day itinerary is available as a downloadable PDF »

Typical Itinerary

Day 1 - 2:Fly to Kathmandu
Team members joining on a "land-only", please plan to arrive in Kathmandu today, when your services will begin. Overnight hotel.
Day 3:Drive to Ramechhap, overnight Freedom Resort
You will leave Kathmandu at around 10am for the 4 - 5-hour drive to Ramechhap. Freedom Resort provides functional accommodation, with a nice spacious terrace for dining/relaxing, a swimming pool and air conditioned, twin-sharing rooms.
Day 4:Fly to Lukla, trek to Phakding
It's a 10-minute walk from Freedom Resort to the airport. You will take an early morning flight to the airstrip at Lukla, the gateway to Nepal's famous Khumbu region. Trek to Phakding. Overnight lodge.
Day 5:Trek to the famous Sherpa capital, Namche Bazaar (3,400m)
Enter the Khumbu National Park and cross the confluence of the Dudh Kosi and the Bhote Kosi. You climb steeply for about two hours up 'Namche Hill' to reach Namche Bazaar. This is a prosperous trading town and the capital of the Khumbu Region. Overnight lodge.
Day 6:Local hike, markets and culture in Namche Bazaar
You will spend two nights in Namche Bazaar to allow you to slowly acclimatise. During this period you trek to the Everest View Hotel (3,900m). Overnight lodges.
Day 7:The famous Sherpa village of Thame (3,844m)
You leave the main Everest trail and journey north-west towards Tibet and the village of Thame, where Tenzing Norgay grew up. Overnight lodge.
Day 8:Acclimatisation day and monastery hike from Thame
Overnight lodge.
Day 9:Off the beaten track: ancient Himalayan villages lead to Lungden (4,380m)
The high valley beyond Thame sees few trekkers and remains the simple domain of yaks, farming and Sherpas. You walk by some very old, authentic Himalayan villages that blend almost invisibly into the landscape to arrive at Lungden. Overnight lodge.
Day 10:Beautiful deserted valley and Renjo La Base Camp (4,900m)
It is a steady walk on a mostly easy-going path to reach your campsite in a beautiful, deserted valley, just below the Nangpa La. This pass is an historical and important trade route between Tibet and Nepal. Overnight camp.
Day 11:Pass 1. Cross the Renjo La (5,388m) to Gokyo Lakes (4,790m)
The ascent of the first of your three passes is up a good but rocky path, which the locals frequently cross with yaks. Once on top the views towards Everest to the east are some of the best. Descend to Gokyo Lakes. Overnight lodge.
Day 12:Rest day at beautiful Gokyo Lakes and Ngozumpa Glacier
Overnight lodge.
Day 13:Peak 1. Ascent of Gokyo Ri (5,357m), trek to Dragnag (4,700m)
You climb the first of the 3 Peaks in the itinerary for stunning views of Everest. You then descend to Gokyo for lunch and cross incredible 'moonscape' of the Ngozumpa Glacier to arrive at Dragnag. Overnight lodge.
Day 14:Pass 2. Cross Cho La (5,380m) to a lovely valley camp at Dzongla (4,830m)
An 8 - 9 hour day to cross the second of the three passes. You follow a river up a pleasant valley and then descend to a grassy spot for lunch. After lunch, the route gains rocky scree and you pick your way up to the top of the pass, where there is a small glacier. Sometimes crampons are required if it is icy gaining the top of the pass. From the snow you descend over more rock and then drop down to reach Dzongla. Overnight lodge.
Day 15:Dzongla to Lobuje (4,910m) with Ama Dablam views
A short day steadily contouring the hillside to arrive at Lobuje, back on the main Everest trail. Overnight lodge.
Day 16:Trek to Everest Base Camp (5,600m) via Gorak Shep (5,220m)
About three hours beyond Lobuje, you reach Gorak Shep, the site of the 1953 expedition's base camp. You'll drop bags here and continue to base camp in about 1 hour 40 minutes. Overnight lodge.
Day 17:Peak 2. Kala Pattar (5,550m) or 2nd opportunity to go to Everest Base Camp (5,600m). Finish the day back in Lobuje (4,940m).
You make an ascent of Kala Pattar in the morning for the best light and views of Everest. If you didn't walk to Everest Base Camp yesterday, you can do so today. Descend to Lobuje. Overnight lodge.
Day 18:Pass 3. Cross Kongma La (5,535m) to Chukkung (4,720m)
Much underrated, the Kongma La is a challenging pass. The views from the Kongma La are really spectacular, especially towards Makalu in the east, of Ama Dablam's North Ridge and of Nuptse towering immediately over your head. The village of Chukkung is about 4 hours beyond the pass. Overnight lodge.
Day 19:Peak 3. Climb Chukkung Ri (5,550m) and trek to Pangboche (3,950m)
The third of your peaks is the hardest and involves some easy scrambling near the summit. The views from the top down the Khumbu Valley are superb. You descend to Pangboche. Overnight lodge.
Day 20:Trek to Namche (3,520m)
You now descend the main Everest trail before climbing to the monastery at Thyangboche. From Thyangboche continue to Namche. Overnight lodge.
Day 21:Steady trekking back to Lukla with plenty of tea house breaks (2,840m)
Day 22:Fly Lukla to Ramechhap
Return drive to Kathmandu. Overnight hotel.
Day 23:At Leisure in Kathmandu
A chance to explore the bustling capital, with its beautiful temples and bustling markets. Overnight hotel.
Day 24:Fly home
Airport transfer. For those joining "land-only", you should book your flight home today.

IMPORTANT NOTE: Every effort will be made to keep to the above itinerary, but as this is adventure travel in a remote mountain region, we cannot guarantee it! Weather conditions, availability of porters and the health of team members can all contribute to changes. The leaders and their Sherpa assistants will try to ensure that the trip runs according to plan, but please be prepared to be flexible if necessary.
