A small, flexible expedition to discover the Ski-Mountaineering delights of the Chilean Lake District. Great skiing, beautiful scenery and a fantastic cultural experience. Jim Blyth's fourth trip to this great destination.

Grade: 3 [read more about our ski mountaineering grades]

Objective
The principal objective of our trip is to ski volcanoes such as Lonquimay (2,840m), Chillan (3,212m), Llaima (3,717m), Villarrica (2,840m) and Osorno (2,652m) in Araucania, Southern Chile. The programme will remain fully flexible to allow us to make the very most of weather and conditions.

What to expect
The Araucanian Volcanoes will in general be skied as day trips if access roads are open as expected. We will try and ski the volcano Lanin, which will require one night on the mountain. Our hired 4 x 4 will get us as close to the roadheads as possible. There are several ski resorts in the area which we may visit should the weather be poor. We will also try to drive if the weather is poor and ski on the good days. We are in the middle of the Ski-Mountaineering season, which runs from August to October. Accommodation will be in clean and secure family-run hotels or chalets with hot showers.

The Skiing
A typical volcano day will give around 1,500m of ascent and descent on 'variable snow', though hopefully mainly spring fresh snow or fresh on a firm base. Strong wind can affect the snow making it more challenging. Please remember that these are day tours and we would expect to be doing on average one every second day, or more if we feel like it. Our major objectives will be interspersed with driving and sightseeing. If the weather is poor we can downhill ski and have shorter days skiing through forests. You do need to be fit, so keep at it!

Weather
We can expect weather and temperatures similar to those encountered ski touring in Europe. There's a good chance of snow storms and high winds and that we'll get wet at some point, although we have had perfect sunshine throughout on past trips.
