Scottish conditions update
The west coast of Scotland is looking extremely wintry at this point in the season. Following a big thaw on Sunday 25 January, temperatures started to fall again. Wednesday this week was another stormy day with the Introductory course staying low, though still experiencing some incredibly windy weather. The Winter Mountaineers headed to the Ice Factor to work on their steep ice technique. Snow fell overnight and on Thursday morning, both the Introductory and Winter Mountaineering courses headed up to Ben Nevis on a less-than-brilliant forecast with new, potentially unstable snow in the forefront of their minds. In the event, it was a stunning day with the temperature cooling as the day wore on. Many of the big ice lines were looking extremely fat and there were teams on classics such as the Curtain and Gemini, as well as as ascents of Tower Ridge. The Shroud was being avoided due to the amount of fresh snow above. Friday dawned with clear skies and the plan for the Winter Mountaineering course was to target multi-pitch ice routes at Beinn Udlaidh, 45 minutes south of our base in Ballachulish. With so much snow and ice on the west coast at this point in the season, it bodes well for those joining courses in February and March. There are still places on some Jagged Globe courses, so get up there - see the availability above.
