Antisana, Oct '13
Written by Leader Gaspar Navarrete, December 2013
It's been a week since the end of the expedition to Antisana but the good memories still remain etched in memory.
From an unusual city tour, because the group was only four and therefore we had the opportunity to tour the historic center of Quito in more depth and from a closer perspective; through the sudden change to climb Guagua Pichincha instead Rucu Pichincha due to a mechanical failure in the Teleferico de Quito; a climb with a touch of mystery and charm in RumiÃ’ahui by the presence of heavy fog that we had all day -except late in the afternoon-; the memory of a great morning with a bright sun in the Cotopaxi. This did not last long and any minute turned into a strong and fearsome thunderstorm that kept us nearly two hours drinking hot chocolate and enjoying good conversation inside the Refugio Jose F. Rivas on Cotopaxi volcano, rich talks about different topics during and after our Illiniza Norte climb, which actually just took us 5 hours to reach the Summit and showed how good prepare and acclimatize the team was. Having had the opportunity to see a lasso competition with locals on their Criollo/Paramero horses; a great opportunity for Steph to see more than just one condor, for Trudy to be received back to Antisana base camp by a herd of llamas in the wild; the demanding and rewarding effort for the whole team, Jon,Steph, Mark, Trudy, Nacho and Gaspar that have managed to climb the magical Antisana. And lastly, our final night of celebration in a traditional bar of Quito at the end of the expedition to celebrate such an intense and successful trip and of course the magical climb of Antisana.
Congratulations to Jon, Steph, Mark and Trudy!
As a final point, I would like to make a special mention the excellent team work in which all members contributed, culminating with the first ascent of Antisana in the season 2013/2014.
