Antisana 2005
Written by Leader, December 2005
This was the third expedition that Jagged Globe has organised to Antisana in Ecuador and the most successful one, with all members climbing all the peaks of the programme. Good weather, a strong team of climbers and the excellent team of guides all contributed to the high success rate. Acclimatisation hikes on Rucu Pichincha and Rumiñahui were completed on November 2 and 3 by all members of the expedition. Later, with a little change of the original programme, we included a day of glacier climbing practice, which was held on the glaciers of Cotopaxi. After glacier training and further acclimatisation on the slopes of Iliniza North, all six members of the team reached the summit of Ecuador's fourth highest peak, Antisana on the morning of November 10, in excellent weather conditions. This proves that November is one of the best months to climb in the Ecuadorian Andes.
Everyone agreed that it was a very enjoyable expedition, combining high quality climbing with a chance to see some of the many faces of Ecuador, the smallest of the Andean countries. The group would like to express their thanks to Javier Herrera, Jagged Globe's Chief Ecuadorian guide, for the good organisation and to the other guides (Felipe and Jaime) for providing an excellent service. The group found that this was a very pleasant expedition climbing one of the remote and least visited peaks of the country. It is worth mentioniong that the group like the fact that on this trip most of the nights were spent camping rather that staying in mountain refuges.
