Ecuador Volcanoes 10 July to 29 July 2001

The first of this summer's Ecuador Volcanoes trips went well despite mixed weather and difficult snow conditions, with members summiting on Ecuador's two highest volcanoes. We revised the itinerary for 2001 to include Ecuador's third highest volcano, Cayambe (5,790m) as a more suitable peak for skills training and acclimatisation. The ascent of Cotopaxi (5,897m) was delayed by 24 hours due to serious weather and avalanche conditions, of the 60 people who left the hut the following night, just 14 summited, 7 of which were part of our team. After a welcome break at the hot springs of Banos, the team moved on to Chimborazo (6,310m) where two members reached Veintimilla Peak and another two made it the extra kilometre across the snow basin to the main summit. Expedition leader, Rosie Goolden commented that this was an excellent effort considering the group was still fairly exhausted from the conditions encountered on Cotopaxi.« | »
