Ecuador Volcanoes - 18 December 2001 to 6 January 2002

Written by Leader Mungo Ross, January 2002

Ecuador has again proved to be a popular destination, with team members getting high on Cayambe and Chimborazo and summitting on Cotopaxi. Unsettled weather and a variety of other factors common to high altitude mountaineering demanded a juggling of the itinerary, which ultimately allowed most of the group to realize, or even surpass, their dreams and aspirations.

Summiteers on Cotopaxi were: Kenny Cameron and Michael Liebreich, followed two days later by Judy Appleby, Katherine Henderson, Dan Straw, Jonathan Gulliford and Simon Goodwin, with Simon Appleby turning round less than 100, from the top due to a bottleneck of other parties, at a ladder over a crevasse!

On Chimborazo, Michael Liebrich got to near 6,000m while Katherine Henderson went on to within 50m of the first summit.

"The Ecuador Volcanoes trip is a wonderful mix of feelings and experiences - from blue ice walls and crevasses to lush, rich and fertile farmland; from refuges perched on mountain sides to 400 year old haciendas and three course dinners; from dawn on a 6,000m summit to sunset and throngs of a local village; and from the icy quiet of a midnight start on summit day to the symphonic clamour of Ecuadorian New Year celebrations. A sensual feast, this trip cannot disappoint."
