Ecuador Volcanoes - 13 August to 1 September 2002

Written by Leader Tim Blakemore, December 2002

A hugely successful expedition with summiteers on Iliniza Norte (5,126m), Cayambe (5,790m) and Cotopaxi (5,897m). Highlights included a perfect moonlit ascent of Cotopaxi, with an unrivalled vista of the Ecuadorian Andes, to a fiercely competitive football match played at 3,800m against a bruising Ecuador side. The team made the decision not to attempt Chimborazo, which was in an extremely "black" ice condition. Ecuador has once again provided a heady mix of Latin American culture, gastronomy, idyllic haciendas and incredibly accessible big mountains. « | »
