Kilimanjaro - 20 Dec 2002 to 2 Jan 2003

Written by Leader Nick Kekus, January 2003

Despite a particularly wet and snowy period in December, the whole group of 12 members led by Nick Kekus successfully climbed Mt Meru and Kilimanjaro.

The group consisted of a broad spectrum of members that gelled well and generally made the best of the conditions.

The ascent of Kilimanjaro involved some interesting walking through forest, bush and rocky terrain leading to our high camp below the Western Breach. Summit day started at midnight and involved snow and rock scrambling to the crater rim with a dramatic final ascent to the summit of Uhuru Peak.

The weather was mixed but despite no view from the summit, it was a successful trip. Everyone got on really well and had a successful time.
