Trip Reports

Kilimanjaro - 10 to 22 February 2003

Written by Leader Joe Gittins, March 2003

The trip was very successful, half the group summited on Mount Meru and all of those who attempted Kilimanjaro. On the way up Meru, we spotted much wildlife, including giraffe, warthog, wildebeast, zebra, colobus monkeys, baboons and many flying things! The ash cone developing in the cauldron of Meru is very impressive and the traverse of the ridge gives excellent views. We were soon back at the hotel for a quick rest before attempting Kilimanjaro. On the Western Breach wall, the sun rose from the other side of Kilimanjaro and created an amazing shadow of the mountain on the valley below, lying adjacent to Meru Peak. Some exciting scrambling led to the top of the Breach wall, where we knew the summit was within our grasp. The last snow-covered slope soon gave way to the summit plateau, and before we knew it, we had conquered the mighty Kilimanjaro. Back at the hotel, many beers were consumed and the following day lots of bargain ornaments, trinkets and toys were to be found in Moshi, before the flight back home. « | »
