Kilimanjaro - 21 July to 2 August
Written by Leader Neal Short, September 2003This was a successful expedition with everyone reaching both summits. The expedition started well with us seeing a wonderful variety of animals whilst travelling to the park gate for Mt Meru and walking up to Miriakamba hut.
It was a cold morning for the summit day of Mt Meru. We topped out with spectacular views of the crater, the shadow of the mountain cast out onto the clouds and of course our main objective, Kilimanjaro.
The expedition continued to enjoy fantastic weather on Kilimanjaron and we progressed up the Umbwe route to high camp at a leisurely pace. After an exceedingly early breakfast, we left for the summit at 12.30am. The Arrow route through the Western Breach provided an interesting ascent to the crater rim. After a short rest with the sun up we climbed the final slopes to Uhuru Peak. The views, like on Mt Meru, were stunning and we spent nearly an hour absorbing the surroundings before descending to Mweka Hut. By the time everyone had reached the hut it had been a long but rewarding day.
We enjoyed a celebratory drink and meal back at the Keys Hotel. Five team members took the three-day Safari extension.« Previous report | Next report »
