Ecuador Volcanoes 29 July - 17 August 2000

Written by Leader Helena Winston, December 2000

Conditions were less than perfect this season on Ecuador's famous volcanoes. Team members, led by Helena Winston, made the summits of Pambamarca and Illiniza Norte. Bad weather meant that they were forced to spend 2 days in the hut before any attempt could be made on Cotopaxi (5,897m). When it finally cleared, what is normally a straightforward snow climb was covered in hard ice. Only two team members felt that they were prepared to have a crack at it, despite the uncharacteristically difficult conditions. Climbing with a guide each, they made it two thirds of the way to the summit before having to descend by abseil and return to the hut. Moving on to Chimborazo (6,310m), things didn't really improve - hot ash from a recent eruption of nearby Tungurahua volcano had melted all the snow and left just the bare ice beneath! « | »
