Ecuador Volcanoes 14 August to 2 September 2001
Written by Leader Ron Holt, September 2001
From the team's point of view, the trip was indeed a success with everyone raving over how diverse Ecuador is - from coast, mountains and jungle and what such a wonderful climate! There was a good mix of sightseeing, culture, tasting the local delicacy (guinea-pig) as well as time to ourselves.
The weather for the first climbing objective was difficult with extremely strong winds and rain (reminiscent of Scotland). However, the decision to go was made by all with Simon, Mary and Richard reaching a point only 15m below the summit (impossible to get to because of crevasses). Jeremy and Alan reached around 5,600m, with Tony and Les at 5,400m and Andrew and Andrea reaching 5,200m. All teams gained fantastic views of the distant volcanoes above the clouds and a real taste of things to come.
With improving weather and having relaxed in the wonderful haciendas, spirits were high for Cotopaxi and everyone made a fantastic effort. With Jack reaching a high point at 5,500m the rest of the party made the summit in three teams (Simon, Mary, Richard, Jeremy), (Alan, Les, Andrew) and (Andrea, Tony). All summit teams were rewarded with what can only be described as the most beatiful view in Ecuador!
With such a great effort behind them and a couple of days in Banos to rest and test the hot springs it was no surprise that Jack, Les and Tony chose to remind behind rather than tackle Chimborazo. This, the highest mountain in Ecuador was an awesome prospect because of the lack of snow anywhere on the mountain. The continual eruption of Tungurahua (witnessed by all en route to Banos) has made the slopes of Chimborazo ice crusted and difficult to ascend. Nevertheless, with one team member remaining behind in the refuge an attempt was made. However, it soon became evident that the conditions were much too difficult and the majority turned around at the snout of the glacier.
Gaby (our Ecuadorian Guide), Simon, Richard and myself, continued for a couple of icy pitches before returning the refuge after hearing rock fall.
Other notable highlights of the trip included a victory for England against Ecuador in a well-contested football match located at 3,750m. A hat-trick by Ron (a scouser) and Jeremy ensured a magnificent 8-3 victory for the away team (so Michael Owen watch out!). Passion ran high for one member of the team but I think the Germans won that particular battle.
All in all it was a fantastic experience, kind hospitality, expert mountain guides, great food - and not forgetting Hunters Bar. The only blip on the horizon was on the way to the airport to return home when the flight tickets and Ronīs passport were stolen resulting in a 24-hour delay for the majority of the team. Simon and Mary returned on Monday and Ron left on Thursday.
