Kilimanjaro Lemosho Glades - 27 Dec to 5 Jan '11
Written by Leader Iain Peter, January 2011
All 15 members of the Jagged Globe Lemosho Glades expedition reached Stella Point at 5.30 am on the 3rd of January 2011. It was bitterly cold but the views of the sun rising across the plains of Tanzania more than made up for the discomfort. The summit of Uhuru Peak was reached at 6.40am.
The expedition had started in the tropical rainforest at Londorossi Gate a week before. The early pattern of sunny mornings followed by afternoon rain had given way to almost perfect, dry weather for the final assault on Mt Kilimanjaro.
The expedition members had the added bonus of bringing in the New Year at Baranco Camp high on the flanks of Kilimanjaro. The ascent of the magnificent Baranco Wall in warm early morning sunshine is surely the ideal way to start the New Year!
All members were agreed that the gradual ascent offered by the Lemosho route as it traverses the western and southern flanks of the mountain provided ideal acclimatisation together with magnificent views of Kilimanjaro’s wonderful and varied countryside.
None of us will forget the magnificent sunrise viewed across the plains of Tanzania on summit day – was that really the curvature of the earth we could see on the far horizon?
