Saturday to Saturday, 6 full days skiing

Introduction

Silvretta in Austria has some of the finest ski touring terrain in the Alps. The skiing is of moderate technical difficulty and is accessed from comfortable huts, making the area ideal for a high-level tour. This is a brilliant tour for skiers of all abilities and is suitable for those relatively new to ski touring.

On this 6-day tour we spend five nights in huts (though they are very comfortable and more akin to mountain hotels!). Whilst the weather and snow conditions will determine the exact itinerary, our intended objectives for the week could include the following peaks: Piz Davo Lais (3,027m), Beite Krone (3,079m), Dreiländerspitze (3,176m), Silvrettahorn (3,244m), Rauher Kopf (3,101m) and Piz Buin (3,312m).

Outline Programme

Day 1:Travel to hotel in Innsbruck. 7pm briefing on the week's activities. Overnight hotel.
Day 2:We use the extensive lift system in Ischgl to access the Heidelberger hut and deposit some heavier pieces of equipment before using the lifts for an off piste ski day. With some excellent off piste on offer we will have plenty of opportunity to get our ski legs sorted for the week, test out our ski equipment and refresh avalanche safety skills. Overnight hut.
Day 3:A day tour from the Heidleberger hut. We aim to ascend one of the fine touring summits above the hut, such as Piz Mottana (2,928m), Piz Davo Lais (3,031m) or Piz Heidelberger (2,965m), skiing back to the Heidleberger hut for a second night. Overnight hut.
Day 4:Today we travel up to the head of the Fimbatal Valley, ascending gently at first to the Breite Krone, (3,079m). A ski depot is usually made just before the summit, giving us about 30 minutes on foot to the top. We then cross the Kronenjoch and ski down the 800m descent to the Jamtal hut (2,185m). The Jamtal hut is the largest in the region, even having an indoor climbing wall. Artificial ice structures are formed outside the hut to give some ice climbing training for those with tired legs but plenty of arm strength to burn. We will be based at the Jamtal hut for 2 nights. Overnight hut.
Day 5:Up early for a day tour, returning to the Jamtal hut. We plan to ascend the Gemspitze (3,107m), which after a gentle glacier approach has a final short exposed rocky ridge, usually 5hrs in total in ascent. The descent down the Jamtalferner ('ferner' is a local word for glacier) often has great snow kept out of the sun on its northerly aspects. On the home run a 300m additional skin could be used to give us a steeper north-facing descent off the Pfannknecht and back to the hut. Overnight hut.
Day 6:Today we head up the valley aiming for the Jamspitz (3,156m) and our longest touring day. This is a steady glacier ascent to a great viewpoint of surrounding peaks. The descent takes us back down the glacier through some north-facing slopes and pockets of good snow to the second skin of the day, over the Ochsencharte col. 400m ascent, a total for the day of 1,400m, then the ski descent to the Weisbadener hut at (2,443m). We'll enjoy a welcome afternoon refreshment on the hopefully sunny hut terrace looking up at the very impressive Silvrettahorn. Overnight hut.
Day 7:On our final day we'll head up behind the hut steeply at first to the Bieltalkopf col at 2,772m. Crossing this we ski into the fantastic Bieltal valley, giving a long scenic descent down a northerly orientated valley out to Bielerhohe, where we can catch hold of the ropes trailed behind a Piste basher to drag our tired bodies along the 8km of snow covered road to the final descent to Galtur and our return for a hotel night in Igls, just outside of Innsbruck.
Day 8:Dispersal. Breakfast will be provided on the last morning before skiers leave the tour.

Pre-Course Skiing Ability

Grade: 8C [ Ski Grading ]
To enjoy the week and for you to take advantage of the instruction being offered, you should have some previous ski mountaineering experience and you should be able to ski linked, short radius turns confidently. When we are not based overnight in the valley, we either do day tours from huts, or a short hut-to-hut tour at the end of the week, allowing you to ski with just a light pack. You should bring along your sense of humour and a desire to learn!
