An ascent of a beautiful volcano near Kilimanjaro

Introduction

Mount Meru (4,556m) is a dormant volcano located 70Km to the west of Kilimanjaro, in Tanzania. This action-packed trip climbs Mount Meru over four days, staying at Mirikamba Hut (2,520m) and Saddle Hut (3,566m) en route to the top. The lower slopes of Meru are full of wildlife - it's common to see Water Buffalo, Elephants, Zebra, Giraffe, Baboons, Colobus Monkeys, Warthogs and Antelope. You've not just come for the wildlife though, as the climb to the summit is a challenging and rewarding journey through incredible volcanic scenery. In clear weather the views across to Kilimanjaro are spectacular as the sun rises over the East African plains.

You can extend your trip with a 3-day Safari Extension, taking in the major parks of the area, Ngorongoro and Tarangire, to see more of Tanzania’s wildlife.

With Flight pricing

Our 'With Flight' price includes an Economy class return airfare from the UK. The cost is based on a group fare that we have already reserved, or individual seats that we have budgeted for. Note that in some circumstances, the earlier you book, the less expensive the airfare and the 'With Flight' price.

Know Before You Go

Jagged Globe supports the British Foreign Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) 'Know Before You Go' campaign. We recommend that you read the FCDO Travel Advice for Tanzania and Netherlands on the FCDO Website.

What the price includes

  • Economy class return airfares from London Heathrow to Kilimanjaro International Airport (unless Land Only).
  • UK airport taxes.
  • National Park fees and Peak Permits.
  • 2 group road transfers between Airport and hotel, connecting with flights (excluded if joining land-only).
  • 2 nights' hotel accommodation in Moshi, on a twin-sharing basis.
  • 2 x breakfasts at the hotel in Moshi.
  • 1 x evening meal at the hotel in Moshi.
  • All road transport by private vehicles as described in the itinerary.
  • Accommodation in mountain huts during the trek.
  • All meals during the trek.
  • Porterage of 12Kg of personal gear per person on the mountain.
  • All costs for Tanzanian guides and local helpers.
  • Jagged Globe kitbag or fleece.

What the price does not include

  • Visa fees.
  • Lunch on Day 2.
  • Lunch and evenings meals on Day 6.
  • Bar bills and laundry.
  • Travel insurance.
  • Optional trips (e.g. a Safari Extension) and sightseeing tours.
  • Tips.

*We return from the mountain and have a late lunch in the hotel in Moshi, which is not included in the cost. It is usual for the team to host the lunch and to invite the mountain staff (but not the porters, who we say goodbye to at the park gates) to say thank you for their help on the climb. For those flying home the same day, we have to find time to pack and to shower, for which some rooms are made available.

For everyone, on the day we fly home, we leave the hotel before dinner (no later than 6 p.m.) for the journey to the airport. We recommend you have a big lunch, and that you buy food again in the airport before boarding, as dinner is not served on the flight until departure from Dar es Salaam much later that evening.

Tailor-made option

We can organise this trek on a ‘tailor-made’ private basis for groups of friends, families, clubs, charities or any other group. Depending on your trekking experience, you may want a Jagged Globe leader or go ‘self-led’ with the assistance of local guides. The cost of going private can be surprisingly reasonable, particularly if you take the self-led option. Please contact us to discuss the itinerary and your preferred dates. We will then send you a quote, with no obligation.

Insurance

You will need a travel insurance policy that caters for the activities you will undertake on your trip with Jagged Globe. It is a requirement of our booking conditions that you have such a policy.
