West coast hiking in Norway

Introduction

Norway is a country of great contrasts. In late summer the mountains are just as dramatic as in winter and the weather can change from warm clear days to sharp frosts with snow on the higher peaks. The temperatures vary from +15C to around 0C. Where east meets west - this trip to the Skarvheimen mountain range has it all!

We hike with lightweight backpacks from 'fjell to fjord' over the wilderness high ground from Finse on the northern edge of the Hardangervidda - a settlement only accessible by rail - along Aurlandsdalen Valley (one of Norway's most famous hiking trails, with magnificent views over the deeply cut lush river valley with impressive waterfalls), before dropping down to the Sognefjord on the west coast.

The trip concludes with some of the 'classic' Norway fjord and mountain views of the west coast scenery around Flam.

Itinerary

Here is an outline itinerary for this trip. A more detailed day-to-day itinerary is available as a downloadable PDF »

Typical Itinerary

Day 1:Fly to Oslo
1.5 hr train journey to Kongsberg (cost not included - see exclusions), where you will meet your guide. We walk for approximately 50 minutes up the hillside to the ski centre above the town to our own sole-use traditional log cabin - we will be staying here overnight and we all help with food preparations/making food.
Day 2:After breakfast, we walk back into the centre of Kongsberg to take the morning bus to Geilo, and then the train to Finse - at a height of 1,222m, the fully staffed cabin creates a great base to 'acclimatise' to our fjell (mountain) environment. The hytte is operated by DNT (Den Norske Turistforeningen) - a network of huts mostly located in the mountainous areas of Norway, and renowned places for meeting likeminded outdoor people. This is an opportunity to find out more about the DNT hut system and general tips on planning your own hiking adventures in the Norwegian mountains. Optional afternoon walk towards the Hardangerjokull (icecap).
Day 3:We begin our hike north from Finse over the highest ground at Sankt Pal (1600m) before heading across varied and mountainous terrain, often covered in snow patches to DNT Geiterygghytte. Look out for mountain fox and reindeer often spotted in this area. (5 - 6 hours. 16km, 400m).
Day 4:Today we take a more leisurely pace to cover the 3 hours 10.4km (270m ascent) over the tops of the fjell from Geiterygghytta to the private hytte - Steinbergdalshytta in Aurlandsdalen, where we spend the night. A classic hytte that has it's own museum of artefacts, showing the valley as it used to be pre-hydro electric power changes. (Accommodation in 4-6 bed bunk rooms full board).
Day 5:DNT Aurlandsdalenhytte is our destination for tonight - it's a longer day as we wind our way along high narrow mountain tracks above the dramatic and impressive Aurlandsdalen below us (5 hours. 10km).
Day 6:Today the wild and beautiful Aurlands valley descends to Vassbygdi over some rocky sections of track. When we arrive in Vassbygdi, we will have completed our 57km hike from fjell to fjord. We take the bus for the final road section of the route to the famous village of Flam, to our accommodation at the head of the Sognefjord (7 hours, 19km). Time to celebrate our achievement.
Day 7:Before we leave the area this morning, we have time for a short walk to the overlook point above the village of Flam and the Sognefjord, and get a great sense of the steep and deeply incised fjords on the west coast of Norway. At 12 noon, we start our journey back on the bus, arriving back at the airport around 1900. Overnight hotel.
Day 8:Fly home

PLEASE NOTE:The above itinerary is intended as a guideline only. While we will make every effort to adhere to it, changes may be forced for reasons beyond our control. When travelling to remote locations such as this, a flexible approach from all members is much appreciated.
