Everest West Ridge Launch

The British Army launched their Everest West Ridge expedition at The Royal Military Academy Sandurst yesterday. The climbing team will arrive in Nepal in less than 3 weeks. The launch included a presentation by the main personalities involved. Expedition leader, Dave Bunting said that he was now looking forward to getting on the mountain, after three years of build-up and preparation.

Of the 2000 people who have climbed Everest, only 19 have done so via the West Ridge. The first ascent of this route was in 1963 by Americans, Hornbein and Unsoeld, and it has been previously tried by the British Army in 1988 and again 1992 (Jagged Globe Directors, Steve Bell and Simon Lowe were on both these expeditions). Two other Army teams will climb Lhakpa Ri in Tibet and Island Peak in Nepal, at the same time as the Main Team is on Everest. Jagged Globe is responsible for the Army's in-country arrangements.
