Introduction

The knife-edged Mittellegi Ridge is one of the most sought-after climbs in the Alps. At Alpine Grade Difficile, this committing route is suitable for fit, experienced Alpinists. The week starts in Saas Grund, where you will spend time acclimatising on appropriate technical ground, before travelling to Grindelwald. The Eiger is a two-day ascent, using the Mittellegi Hut, but there are 3 days set aside to give us some flexibility with weather and conditions. The ascent is a 9–12-hour round trip in good conditions.

Your experience: Climbers need to be very fit and competent at rock and mixed climbing in crampons, with RECENT experience of Alpine routes graded AD and above. If you have not climbed with us before, please send us your CV and a reference from a Mountain Guide prior to booking.

Course start point: Saas Grund, Switzerland

Typical Programme

Day 1:Saturday.
Meet at the Course Base at 7pm. Briefing on the week's activities in the evening. Overnight hotel.
Day 2:Sunday.
Ascent of the Jegihorn (3,206m) via the route, Alpendurst (4C). This is a superb 13-pitch route that you can climb in your mountain boots. This first day out also serves as excellent acclimatisation. Overnight hotel.
Day 3:Monday.
Ascend to the Almageller Hut (2,894m). In the afternoon you will climb the Dri Hornli (AD). Another superb climb that can be done in big boots. Overnight hut.
Day 4:Tuesday.
Ascent of Portjengrat (3,654m). At AD+ the traverse is a fabulous outing on rock. Return to the hut. An alternative might be the South Ridge of the Lagginhorn (AD) from the Hohass Hut, having climbed something from the valley on Monday.
Day 5:Wednesday.
Descend to the valley and travel to Grindelwald. If the weather forecast looks better for Wednesday/Thursday you Guide may suggest travelling to Grindelwald on Tuesday and ascending to the Mittellegi Hut on Wednesday. Overnight hotel.
Day 6:Thursday.
Ascend to the Mittellegi Hut (3,355m). This is a relatively short day, but it should not be underestimated as it involves some tricky climbing. Overnight hut.
Day 7:Friday.
Ascent of Eiger (3,970m). Descend to valley. Overnight hotel.
Day 8:Saturday.
Dispersal. Breakfast will be provided on the last morning before you leave Grindelwald.
