More Acclimatisation = More Success. Follow the optimum ascent profile on Kilimanjaro and increase your chances of reaching the summit

Introduction

Kilimanjaro is a giant, snow-capped volcano rising spectacularly from the dusty plains in Tanzania. It is the highest mountain in Africa and a superb challenge for fit walkers. However, Kilimanjaro is frequently underestimated by those who try and climb it too quickly, thereby succumbing to altitude sickness. At Jagged Globe we've been running treks and expeditions to Kilimanjaro since 1994. Our Lemosho Glades itinerary is carefully designed with the aim of getting every team member to the summit - something that we achieve with the vast majority of our groups.

There is the option to join a Safari Extension, taking in the major parks of the area, Ngorongoro and Tarangire, to see more of Tanzania's wildlife.

Join us on Kilimanjaro

  • The Lemosho Glades route is the most varied and scenic route on Kilimanjaro, which also provides the best acclimatisation
  • Trek with a mountaineering company that specialises in high-altitude ascents. We have been working collaboratively with our Tanzanian Destination Partner for nearly 30 years
  • Treks led by professional and qualified English-speaking Tanzanian guides
  • Our porters are well-equipped with sleeping bags, waterproof jackets and fleeces supplied by us
  • Stay in locally-owned hotels whilst in Moshi, thereby directly supporting the local economy
  • Safety back up - teams carry oxygen for therapeutic use, as well as a Portable Altitude Chamber (PAC) and comprehensive first-aid kit
  • Optional 3-day safari extension

What to expect

This trip is suitable for enthusiastic walkers who want a big challenge. On average, you walk for 6 hours each day, but summit day is typically 12 hours. No previous experience of high altitudes is necessary, as every caution is taken to ensure a gradual and thorough period of acclimatisation.

Tailor-made option

We can organise this trek on a ‘tailor-made’ private basis for groups of friends, families, clubs, charities or any other group. Depending on your trekking experience, you may want a Jagged Globe leader or go ‘self-led’ with the assistance of local guides. The cost of going private can be surprisingly reasonable, particularly if you take the self-led option. Please contact us to discuss the itinerary and your preferred dates. We will then send you a quote, with no obligation.

Insurance

You will need a travel insurance policy that caters for the activities you will undertake on your trip with Jagged Globe. It is a requirement of our booking conditions that you have such a policy. Itinerary

Here is an outline itinerary for this trip. A more detailed day-to-day itinerary is available as a downloadable PDF »

Outline Itinerary

Day 1 - 2:Fly London to Kilimanjaro International Airport
Flights from the UK depart in the evening. You arrive in Tanzania the following morning and then take a 50-minute transfer to the hotel in Moshi. Overnight hotel.
Day 3:Londorossi Gate to Mti Mkubwa (9,170ft / 2,800m)
After breakfast at the hotel, you meet our local guides, our cook and camp assistants. It is a three-hour drive to the Londorossi Park Gate, located on the western side of Kilimanjaro. You will walk for 3 to 5 hours to reach Mti Mkubwa ('Big Tree') camp, located in the forest.
Day 4:Mti Mkubwa to Shira One Camp (11,480ft / 3,500m)
You climb through the rainforest towards the giant moorland zone and up to the Shira Crater at 3,305m to reach Shira One Camp.
Day 5:Shira One Camp to Shira Two Camp (12,470 ft / 3,800m) via the Cathedral
You hike east across the Shira Plateau, making a detour towards the plateau's southern lip to ascend Shira Cathedral (12,470ft / 3,880 m) before reaching Shira Two Camp.
Day 6:Shira Two Camp to Baranco Camp (12,675 ft / 3,900 m)
Today is a 7-hour hike in superb country. You pass the Lava Tower first (altitude, 4640m), then traverse the southwestern flank of Kibo and slowly descend past giant groundsel and lobelia to Baranco, our most spectacular campsite, at the foot of Kibo Peak.
Day 7:Baranco Camp to Karanga Camp (13,300ft / 4,050m)
You first challenge today is to overcome the Baranco Wall, which is 600 ft high and takes you to an altitude of 4,244m. From the top, the receding Heim Glacier on Kilimanjaro's south face is clearly visible. Your route continues eastwards underneath the Decken and Rebman Glaciers to Karanga Camp.
Day 8:Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp (15,090ft / 4,650m)
From Karanga Camp a 3-hour steady walk takes you to Barafu Camp (4,650m), from where you will make your summit attempt in the early hours of tomorrow morning.
Day 9:Barafu Hut to Uhuru Peak (19,340 ft / 5,896m) to Millennium Camp
You start climbing in the dark well before dawn, on the steepest and most demanding part of the mountain. You'll aim to reach Stella Point on the Crater Rim by sunrise after about 6 hours. From Stella Point, it takes another hour to reach Uhuru - the highest point on the crater rim and the true summit of Africa. You descend to Millennium Camp (3,820m). This is by far the toughest day of the trek and normally takes between 12 and 15 hours.
Day 10:Descend to Mweka Gate. Drive to Moshi.
In the morning you walk to Mweka Gate, where the team will say farewell to their porters. The team drives back to hotel for a late celebratory lunch. Overnight hotel.
Day 11:Fly home
Very early morning flight from Kilimanjaro Airport.

IMPORTANT NOTE:
Every effort will be made to keep to the above itinerary, but as this is Adventure Travel in a remote mountain region, we cannot guarantee it. Weather conditions, road conditions, vehicle breakdowns and the health of participants can all contribute to changes. The Trek Leader and our local agent will try to ensure that the trip runs according to plan, but an easy going nature will be an asset!

Optional Safari Extension

We can arrange for you to go on a safari after the climb and delay the return flight to London accordingly. This extension visits the major parks of the area; namely Ngorongoro and Tarangire.

Day 11 Leave Keys Hotel at 08:30 hrs. Drive to Lake Manyara with picnic lunch and game drive. Drive to Kitela Lodge. Dinner and overnight at lodge.

Day 12 Full day tour of the Ngorongoro crater. Drive to Tarangire. Dinner and overnight at Roika Tented Lodge.

Day 13 Early morning game drive then back to the lodge for breakfast. Half day game drive in Tarangire then drive back to the Keys Hotel. Dinner and overnight at the hotel.

Day 14 Fly home
