Saturday to Saturday, 6 full days skiing
Introduction
Andermatt has a well-deserved reputation for fantastic off piste skiing and ski touring, whilst retaining the charm of a small Swiss village. Its snow record is un-beaten in the Alps, so great conditions are a reliable bonus on top of its small resort charm. It also remains relatively quiet compared to other resorts. The Gemmstock lift (2,961m) provides the majority of the resort-based access, whilst the Oberalp Pass train gives ready transport for touring and also to the neighbouring resorts of Disentis and Mustér. The terrain is superb and generally pretty mellow (unless you go looking!) and the tours are mostly under 1,000m days, so it’s not too physical. It is fair to say it is hard to find a better ski base for the adventurous, but not extreme skier.
This course is therefore a perfect introduction to all aspects of the mountain environment on skis. As well as utlising the uplift and train, you’ll do some short skinning sections to get to the un-touched stuff. Later in the week you will spend two nights in mountain huts, allowing you to get deeper into the heart of the mountains.
Course base: Andermatt, Switzerland
Outline Programme
Day 1: | Course participants meet at the course base at 7pm. Briefing on the week's activities in the evening. The Course Director will organise any hire equipment or boot fittings for the following morning. |
Day 2: | Off piste skiing off the Gemmstock lift, with a descent of the Feisental giving a variety of lines through perfect rolling off piste terrain. |
Day 3: | Day tour traversing beneath Pizzo Centrale (2,999m) giving access to a wonderful north-facing descent with a small glacier and return run to Andermatt. |
Day 4: | We catch the train for a short ride to Hospental and climb the Winterhorn (2,661m) following along its north-east spur. We ski back down the same route, with variations to catch the best of the snow. |
Day 5: | We take the train to Oberalp then ascend the Pazzolastock (2,740m) to give us a great run down to the valley floor and short skin to the Maighels Hutte (2,310m). |
Day 6: | From the hut we ascend Piz Borel (2,952m) and Piz Ravetsch (3,007m) at the head of the valley, returning to the Maighels hutte for a second night. |
Day 7: | We ascend Piz Badus (2,928m) crossing a high col and allowing us to ski all the way back to Andermatt and well-earned refreshment in the village Cafe/Bar. |
Day 8: | Dispersal. Breakfast will be provided on the last morning before skiers leave the course. |
