Nordic Ski Technique

A starting point for learning the skills necessary to ski to the Poles or across Greenland

Introduction

Time to dig out those skis and go gliding through the beautiful Norwegian scenery in the mountains around Hemsedal, but this time start the season by focusing on improving your ski technique. It might also be your first experience on skis that need waxing - and that's a whole new world opening up to those who have always previously used skins for grip.

With small groups and time to consolidate your learning, let us know what you want to work on developing - ski efficiency and improved glide, controlling the pulk on descents, confidence on downhills or maybe another aspect of winter polar travel eg. winter navigation. Make this training opportunity work for you!

This course is aimed at those who have already completed a couple of polar trips, and want to focus on their efficiency and confidence on skis with a pulk.

Start pointint: Oslo, Norway
Grade: 2A

Experience Required

The trip requires some previous experience of cross country skiing with a pulk, although you don't need to be proficient in these skills. You need to have a reasonable fitness level (for example, a regular hillwalker able to carry a day rucksack for approx 5 - 6 hours on several consecutive days). The fitter you are, the more you will get out of this course.

Itinerary

Here is an outline itinerary for this trip. A more detailed day-to-day itinerary is available as a downloadable PDF »

Outline Itinerary

Day 1:Travel to course base in Norway
Fly to Norway. Arrival in Norway at Oslo Gardemoen airport. Transfer by airport bus into the mountains (approx 3.5 hours). We will be staying all four nights in the log cabin. Evening: dinner and itinerary briefing.
Day 2:Introductory day
After breakfast, we prepare the waxing skis, then head off spending time improving glide technique on these 'skinny' track skis the first day. We'll leave some time each of the next two days for you to head out 'on tour' for individual consolidation of skills. This area is well-supported with help and advice, and easy to find your way around.
Day 3:Today we swop back to the expedition skis with half skins and polar boots. Time spent on the introductory downhill slopes and offtrack slopes with/without the pulk will improve our balance and confidence in downhill techniques. We can alter the plan to suit our group - varying from one-to-one tuition and advice, to group teaching, to individual practice.
Day 4:Let's put it all into practice - a full ski touring day, with polar navigation training along the way. Maybe you're using this training course to prepare for a polar race event? We can give you some tips and tricks, especially regarding becoming efficient with your polar routines. Once we return to the cabin, we sort all of the equipment, take a well-earned shower and celebrate our achivements over our final dinner.
Day 5:Travel home
Morning transfer by train back to Oslo, for onward journey to Oslo Gardermoen airport. (Please note, you make this journey back to the airport with other participants from the course unaccompanied by the guide, who remains at the cabin at the end of the course).
