Nordic Ski Technique

A starting point for learning the skills necessary to ski to the Poles or across Greenland
Introduction
Time to dig out those skis and go gliding through the beautiful Norwegian scenery, but this time start the season by focusing on improving your ski technique. It might also be your first experience on skis that need waxing and that's a whole new world opening up to those who have always previously used skins for grip. With small groups and time to consolidate your learning, let us know what you want to work on developing - ski efficiency, controlling the pulk on descents, confidence on downhills, or maybe another aspect of winter polar travel eg. winter navigation or night navigation. Make this training opportunity work for you!
This course is aimed at those who have already completed a couple of polar trips and would like to focus on their efficiency and confidence on skis with a pulk.
Start pointint: Oslo, Norway
Grade: 2A
Experience Required
The trip requires some previous experience of cross country skiing with a pulk, although you don't need to be proficient in these skills. You need to have a reasonable fitness level (for example, a regular hillwalker able to carry a day rucksack for approx 5 - 6 hours on several consecutive days). The fitter you are, the more you will get out of this course.Additional Information

We can organise this expedition on a ‘tailor-made’ private basis for groups of friends, families, clubs, charities or any other group. Depending on your skiing experience, you may want a Jagged Globe leader or go ‘self-led’ with the assistance of local guides. The cost of going private can be surprisingly reasonable, particularly if you take the self-led option. Please contact us to discuss the itinerary and your preferred dates. We will then send you a quote, with no obligation.

Outline Itinerary
Day 1: | Travel to course base in Norway Fly to Norway. Road transfer into the mountains. Evening meal and briefing. |
Day 2: | Introductory day After breakfast, we prepare the waxing skis, then head off spending time improving glide technique on these 'skinny' track skis the first day. We'll leave some time each of the next two days for you to head out 'on tour' for individual consolidation of skills. This area is well-supported with help and advice, and easy to find your way around. At this time of year the days are short, however there is 9km of floodlit track leading out straight from the door, so you can keep on practicing your skiing even after dark. Overnight at the fjellstue. |
Day 3: | Today we swop back to the expedition skis with half skins and polar boots. Time spent on the introductory downhill slopes and offtrack slopes with/without the pulk will improve our balance and confidence in downhill techniques. More consolidation time at the end of the day. Overnight at the fjellstue. |
Day 4: | This will be an opportunity to put into practice our ski techniques in a variety of locations around the Kvitåvatn area on steeper ground and almost exclusively offtrack. We plan to explore the beautiful Andordalen area before setting up camp - it feels good to be back out 'on tour' in the mountains, however short the duration of the expedition. Optional night 4 back indoors at the fjellstue, if preferred. |
Day 8: | Travel home After breakfast, we return from our campsite early in the morning and have time to sort the group kit/pack whatever we've left behind at the fjellstue. Around midday, we start our journey by public transport - taxi, buses and train back to Oslo airport, arriving early evening for a flight home the same day. (Please note, you make this journey back to the airport with other participants from the course unaccompanied by the guide, who remains at the fjellstue at the end of the course). |
