Dzo Jongo Summits

An excellent introduction to mountaineering in the Himalaya with two 6,000m peaks in Ladakh

Introduction

This expedition to Northern India aims to climb Dzo Jongo East (6,096m), a technically straightfoward peak that is accessible from the ancient city of Leh, the capital of Ladakh. If you are a keen walker or trekker and have used an ice axe and crampons, you could well attempt Dzo Jongo as you first Himalayan peak.

On this trip you’ll fly from Delhi to Leh and spend two days sightseeing, acclimatising and visiting hill top monasteries. The regal air of the city, with its 'potala-like' palace and the charm of the friendly and traditionally dressed Ladakhi people contribute to the experience of this expedition.

Rested and ready to face the mountains, you’ll drive to Chilling and begin a 5-day trek to base camp. The trek follows part of the famous Markha Valley to Nimaling, before continuing to a quiet base camp at 5,050m. After a rest/acclimatisation day, we climb the striking east ridge of Dzo Jongo East. The ascent is never difficult, with the final 300m being on easily-angled snow.

Join us on Dzo Jongo

  • Summit success in July 2023 and July 2024.
  • Team led by Jagged Globe leader from the UK.
  • Superb acclimatisation trek through the Markha Valley.
  • Much quieter than Stok Kangri or Kang Yatze II.

Experience Required

Dzo Jongo Summits is an excellent first Himalayan expedition and no previous experience of high altitude or mountaineering is required. To join the climb, you need to be familiar with the use of ice axe and crampons on low-angled terrain and be confident on British Grade I scrambles, such as Snowdon's Crib Goch.

Our Introductory Long Weekend in Scotland would provide good preparation for this trip.

Tailor-made option

We can organise this expedition on a ‘tailor-made’ private basis for groups of friends, families, clubs, charities or any other group. Depending on your mountaineering experience, you may want a Jagged Globe leader or go ‘self-led’ with the assistance of local guides. The cost of going private can be surprisingly reasonable, particularly if you take the self-led option. Please contact us to discuss the itinerary and your preferred dates. We will then send you a quote, with no obligation.

Insurance

You will need a travel insurance policy that caters for the activities you will undertake on your trip with Jagged Globe. It is a requirement of our booking conditions that you have such a policy. For a list of insurers who specialise in mountaineering, trekking and skiing, please see our Travel Insurance page »

The Expedition Leader and our local agent will try to ensure that the trip runs according to plan, but an easy going nature will be an asset!
