Trek into the heart of the Nepalese Himalaya
Introduction
The impressive amphitheatre of the Annapurna Sanctuary draws trekkers each year, enticed by the dramatic mountains and glaciers, including Annapurna I (8,091m), one of the world's highest peaks. This trek can be completed in just over two weeks from the UK and is an excellent introduction to trekking, as the overall altitudes are relatively moderate and the trails are good. The itinerary is designed to provide a steady rate of acclimatisation, as well as the best views of the mountains as you enter the Sanctuary. You fly to Kathmandu and onwards to Pokhara. From Pokhara the trek begins steadily, taking in the famous viewpoint of Poon Hill (3,190m) early in the morning, when the air is clear and the views most reliable. You then follow the Modi Khola Valley to Machhapuchare Base Camp and eventually, Annapurna Base Camp in the heart of the Annapurna Sanctuary. All around are colossal Himalayan Giants dripping with glaciers. The return trek to Pokhara takes four days and from here you fly back to Kathmandu, with a free day of sight seeing before heading home. Overall this is an ideal trek for 'first time trekkers', with the highest night spent at 3,700m.

Day 5: | Poon Hill and trek to Tadopani (2,630m) It is worth ascending Poon Hill before breakfast, as the cool, still morning air should provide clear views across the Kali Gandaki towards Machapuchhre (Fish Tail Peak), Dhaulagiri, Nilgiri and the Annapurnas. After breafast back in the lodge, the route descends through jungle, pine and rhododendron forests, then climbs back up from the riverbed to Tadopani. Overnight lodge. |

Day 7: | Trek to Doban (2,600m) Descend to the river and then climb up to Sinuwa from where you walk through thick forest festooned with orchids and ferns on the western bank of Modi River to Khuldi. Day 9: | Trek to Machhapuchhare Base Camp (3,700m) It is a gradual ascent to Machhapuchhare Base Camp, though the trail does cross a number of avalanche paths - a stark reminder of the heavy snowfall that can occur in winter. The mountain views are fabulous; the panorama includes Hiunchuli, Annapurna South, Annapurna I, Annapurna III (7,555m), Gangapurna (7,454m) and Machhapuchhare itself. Overnight lodge. |

The trail follows a stream and passes by a few huts alongside the moraine. There are tremendous views of the south face of Annapurna towering above the sanctuary to the north-west. It takes about 2 hours to make the climb to base camp, so there is plenty of time to walk at your own pace. After lunch, you descend to Machhapuchare Base Camp for the night. Overnight lodge. |
Day 11: | Return trek to Bamboo (2,430m) You retrace your steps through Doban as far as Bamboo. Overnight lodge. |

You traverse through a mix of cultivated fields interspersed with scrub vegetation, crossing suspension bridges, before ascending through thick rhododendron forest onto a ridge descending from Machhapuchhare. The birdlife in the rhododendron forest is abundant. A stone paved trail then takes you down to Pothana. Overnight lodge. |
Day 14: | Trek to Phedi, drive to Pokhara and return flight to Kathmandu You walk to Phedi, then bus to Pokhara and return flight to Kathmandu. Overnight hotel. |
