A stunning, remote, yet accessible 7,000 metre (23,373ft) peak in the heart of the Himalaya
Introduction
An expedition to Himlung Himal is a grand adventure in a remote corner of Nepal. The mountain is located north of Manaslu and the Annapurna range, right next to the Tibetan border. The journey to base camp takes just over a week, up a deep gorge teeming with waterfalls, wildlife and picturesque villages. Passing through the Gates of Phu, you experience stupas, shrines and crafted mani walls leading into the incredible stone-walled village of Phu, certainly one of Nepal's most beautiful villages. This area wasn’t opened up to foreigners until the early ‘90s, which explains why the approach and Himlung Himal are virtually untrodden compared to some areas of Nepal.Base Camp is set on grassy terraces, a comfortable and scenic camp looking out over the Annapurna range. From Base Camp at 4,800m on the edge of the Pangir Glacier, we cross over and ascend to Camp 1 at 5,400 metres, then ascend a couloir and traverse above the spectacular icefall to Camp 2 on a level plateau at 6,000 metres. We climb high on the ridge above to 6,300 metres to place our third and final camp, with spectacular views out the tent door over the Annapurnas and Dhaulagiri. All except summit day, we climb in the warmth of the day and the technical difficulties are no harder than Alpine PD+. In the often stable weather post monsoon, we allow ample time for good acclimatisation and to enjoy the fine climbing on this spectacular route. It is an ideal first 7,000 metre peak, with great climbing, memorable views and the true excitement of climbing a significant and stunning peak in the heart of the Himalaya.
Join us on Himlung Himal
- Successful expeditions in 2022, 2023 and 2024.
- Steeper sections of fixed rope, but significant independent climbing with ice axe and crampon.
- Rare peak where day-time climbing is the norm, in comfortable temperatures.
- An ideal goal on its own, or as an ideal stepping stone to 8,000 metres.
Experience Required
Himlung Himal involves roped-up glacier climbing with crevasse crossings on moderately-angled snow slopes up to 40 degrees. Fixed ropes will be used on steeper sections of the climb. Team members will need to carry their own gear, melt snow for water and look after themselves on a high and exposed mountain, which is also very cold. Our Sherpa team will assist in establishing the camps on the mountain. We have graded the expedition '3D'. This is the same grade that we give Denali. To join the expedition and have a good chance of success, you must have:
- Climbed routes with ice axe and crampons of Scottish Grade III, Alpine PD+ or equivalent.
- Expedition experience on mountains above 6,000m, graded 3B or above on the Jagged Globe scale (we may accept applications from those who have climbed Aconcagua, who also have a reasonable base of experience in Scotland or the Alps).
- A high level of fitness and psychological fortitude to endure a lengthy expedition in a remote area, climbing at very high altitude in the extreme cold.
Our Scottish Scottish Winter Courses and our Alpine Courses would provide good training for this expedition.
