Experience Required

To join us on Manaslu you should have completed Alpine climbs equivalent to AD and have prior altitude experience of at least 6,000m. Climbers who have achieved ascents of mountains such as Illimani, Chimborazo, Denali, Peak Lenin, Himlung Himal or similar, could well consider Manaslu.

All team members need to be in excellent physical condition if they are to have a realistic chance of staying strong right up to the summit. Climbing an 8,000m peak is a tough test of endurance; both physical and psychological, so you need to make sure that you are prepared for the effort required to sustain the duration of the expedition.

To join this expedition team members must have:

  • Previous high altitude experience above 6,000m.
  • Completed routes of Alpine AD and/or Scottish Grade III standard.
  • The ability to jumar and abseil/rappel fixed ropes unsupervised.
  • The ability to move between camps unsupervised.
  • Crevasse awareness and experience of crevasse rescue techniques.
  • The ability to carry loads up to 12Kg at high altitude.
  • The ability to climb on consecutive days at high altitude.
  • The ability to look after one's self whilst in high camps on the mountain.

Itinerary

Here is an outline itinerary for this trip. A more detailed day-to-day itinerary is available as a downloadable PDF »

Outline Itinerary

Day 1 - 2:Fly to Kathmandu.
Team members joining on a "land-only", please plan to arrive in Kathmandu on Day 2 no later than 1630, when your services will begin. Overnight hotel.
Day 3:Fly to Samagoan (3,541m).
Overnight lodge.
Day 4 - 6:Acclimatisation around Samagoan.
Overnight lodges. Acclimatisation walks from Samagoan.
Day 7:Move to ABC (4,750m).
Day 8 - 34:Ascent of Manaslu (8,163m).
Having spent four nights in Samagoan before moving to base camp, we aim to embark on our first rotation straight away as team members should be well-acclimatised. We plan to use four camps above Base Camp.

ABC to Camp One (5,800m)
Easy rock scrambling with one straightforward step of 10-15 metres below Camp 1. The rock is loose in places. Camp 1 is located in a superb position on a col. 3 - 4 hours climbing time. On our first rotation we plan to sleep at Camp 1 and more part way towards, or 'tag' Camp 2.

Camp One to Camp Two (6,400m)
The route between camp 1 and Camp 2 goes up a couloir and through an icefall, weaving between seracs with crevasses underfoot. This area is prone to avalanche/serac collapse - usually outpouring at well-defined chutes, which can be crossed quickly. 4 - 6 hours climbing to camp 2.

Camp Two to Camp Three (6,800m)
The route to camp 3 goes up to an icefall and then weaves up onto the main slope. On the summit push we will move through the camps, utilising Camp 3 before moving up to Camp 4 the following afternoon. 2 - 3 hours climbing to camp 3.

Camp Three to Camp Four (7,400m)
Camp 4 is used as the launch pad for the summit. We will move up and rest in the afternoon. A rightward trending ramp, which can be very icy, is traversed and leads into Camp 4. Climbing time 4 - 6 hours.

Summit (8,163m)
The slope from Camp 4 is about 20 degrees behind camp, before steeping up to 30 to 40 degrees. As you get higher the slopes get steeper, first to the foresummit, then to the final highest summit, which is a steep pinnacle 150 metres away from the foresummit and 50 metres high. Strong climbers make the climb in 4 - 5 hours having left at 0300hrs. Slower climbers leave as early as midnight and take 6 - 7 hours. From the summit, the team will aim to return to Camp 2, though some teams descend all the way to base camp. Anticipate an 8 - 12 hour round trip to the summit and back to Camp 2.

Day 35:Return to Samagoan.
Overnight lodge.
Day 36:Helicopter to Kathmandu
Helicopter flight back to Kathmandu (please be aware that the flight relies on clear weather and is likely to be very early in the morning). Overnight hotel.
Day 37:Buffer day
Kathmandu. Overnight hotel.
Day 38:Fly home
Airport transfer. For those joining "land-only", you should book your flight home today.

PLEASE NOTE: The above itinerary is not a fixed programme but is intended to give an indication of the likely events during the expedition. Please note that because of the nature of mountaineering on 8,000m peaks, it will be necessary to have a flexible plan in order to take the best advantage of situations as they present themselves. Any changes to the itinerary will be made with a view to maximising the benefit to the team members and of ensuring their eventual success on the mountain.
