Sunday to Friday, 5 full days' instruction

Introduction

Our 2024 Scottish Winter Courses will also be available non-residential. Please contact us for prices without accommodation and food.

This course is for those who have already attended our Introductory Winter Mountaineering course who would like to consolidate the skills they have already learned.

You will concentrate on increasing your confidence on general winter mountaineering routes, rather than moving onto steeper graded climbs using ropes. If you want to get onto more technical, pitched climbs, with a higher Instructor : Participant ratio, we recommend that you join the Winter Mountaineering course.

Outline Programme

Day 1:The course begins at 6 p.m. on Sunday evening with the Course Briefing. The briefing covers essential information for the week ahead. We will discuss equipment for the following day and issue hire kit. After dinner there will be a short presentation on winter clothing and cold injury.
Day 2:A day of revision and getting to know your own kit again. You will also cover the important skills of footwork, cramponing, using your ice axe in ascent and descent, avalanche assessment and arresting falls.
Day 3 - 6:This is what you have come for - ascents of major peaks in Scotland. As always the objectives and the training areas will be weather dependent. The focus will be on improving your overall mountaineering ability in the winter environment. There will be a growing emphasis on your own ability to make decisions, whether it be about route choice, where to take a break, or when to shed/add a layer. Overall, you should expect to feel more confident about mountaineering under your own steam and leave the course with more valuable experience under your belt.

Typical routes and mountaineering days are:

  • Bidean Nam Bian via the Lost Valley
  • The Mamore Horseshoe from Kinlochmore
  • The Ring of Steall from Glen Nevis
  • Stob Coire Sgreamhach from Glencoe
  • A traverse of Carn Mor Dearg Arete to the summit of Ben Nevis (I)
