Explore the Trollheimen mountains of Oscar II land in Western Svalbard

Introduction

Are you ready to join us on our newest trip, exploring the Trollheimen mountains of Oscar II land on the west side of Svalbard on skis?

This tour gives us an opportunity to see some wonderful nature - seal, walrus, arctic foxes, birds and maybe even polar bears. This is an area of incredible beauty, yet quite a contrast to the other areas covered on the Svalbard explorer or crossing ski trips.

The expedition comprises 6 days on skis. Everyone will haul their own equipment in a sled, plus some of the communal group equipment. Every night will be spent in tents, and all take part in the work required to complete the journey.

There will also be a chance to explore the quirky settlement of Barentsburg before we set sail back to Longyearbyen.

Start point: Longyearbyen, Svalbard
Grade: 3C

Experience Required

Previous experience on cross country skis, pulling a pulk, and camping in winter conditions.

Accommodation

We use Guest House 102 in Longyearbyen as a starting point for all of our expeditions. Here the service is good and our equipment store is located a stone's throw away. On our journey, we overnight in 2 - 3 person winter tents from Hilleberg.

Itinerary

Here is an outline itinerary for this trip. A more detailed day-to-day itinerary is available as a downloadable PDF »

Outline Itinerary

Day 1:Flight from UK to Oslo
Overnight hotel at Oslo airport (Unless joining 'Land Only').
Day 2:Flight from Oslo to Longyearbyen
Longyearbyen is the only settlement permanently inhabited all-year round on Svalbard. Briefing, kit check, and pack the pulks, ready for an early sailing tomorrow morning. Overnight in Longyearbyen.
Day 3:Travel across Isfjord to the start point of our ski journey
We join the wildlife cruise boat, M/V Billefjord, which takes a couple of hours to cross the Isfjord to our drop-off point at Ymerbukta. Depending on the ice conditions in the fjord, we may need to use rigid inflatable boats (RIBs) the final part of the journey to the edge of the glacier/sea ice. This first night we ski a short distance away from the coastline before setting up camp. Dates in the itinerary from this point can be a little uncertain, due to snow and sea ice conditions, weather, speed of travel etc and also the final route approval from the sysselmesteren (Chief of police).
Day 4 - 7:Ski journey in Trollheimen
Set off on our journey exploring this part of Oscar II Land - we will be covering approx 12km each day. This trip isn't about covering huge distances, but having time to enjoy our surroundings each day. At this time of year, the area will be teaming with the sound of birdlife returning to the island after the long winter, and there are often walrus and seals to be spotted along this fjord edge.
Day 8:End of our ski journey and boat journey back in Longyearbyen
We ski back down to the edge of the Isfjord for our boat pickup on the edge of Isfjord (it might be necessary to use the RIBs again, to get back on board M/V Billfjord wildlife cruise boat). The cruise continues south to the quirky Russian/Ukranian settlement of Barentsburg, where there will be a short stop and time to explore, before our boat returns us to Longyearbyen again early evening. Sort kit, and time for a late celebration dinner. Overnight in Longyearbyen.
Day 9:Return flight home.
