Dhaulagiri VII

An expedition to Nepal's most technically straightforward and objectively-safe 7,000m peak

Introduction

Dhaulagiri VII (also known as 'Putha Hiunchuli') is probably the 'easiest' 7,000m peak in Nepal. It is located in Dolpa or the "Wild West" of Nepal, made famous by Peter Matthiessen's book The Snow Leopard. This is a remote and seldom-visited area and an expedition to it is an adventure in the true sense of the word. With no significant technical climbing, the mountain is still a serious undertaking and provides excellent training for those who want to attempt Everest or other 8,000m peaks.

You will use three camps above base camp, with the highest at 6,500m. The route is technically easy, but there are long distances between camps, so you can expect it to be very hard work. Mountaineers with previous experience on 6,000m peaks graded 2B or above could consider the climb if they are looking for a full-blown expedition experience.

Join Jagged Globe on Dhaulagiri VII

  • We have previous experience of the mountain, including the logistical difficulties of reaching base camp.
  • This is a technically easy 7,000m peak, but it's in a remote and wild area.
  • The mountain is excellent preparation for Everest or another 8,000m peak.

Itinerary

Here is an outline itinerary for this trip. A more detailed day-to-day itinerary is available as a downloadable PDF »

Typical Itinerary

Please note this itinerary is flexible and subject to change. You are travelling to an extremely remote part of Nepal, with limited infrastructure. Team members need to be flexible and expect changes to the itinerary.

Day 1 - 2:Fly to Kathmandu
Team members joining on a “land-only”, please plan to arrive in Kathmandu on Day 2 no later than 1030, when your services will begin. Overnight hotel.
Day 3:Fly to Nepalgunj
An early morning flight to Nepalgung. Overnight Batika.
Day 4:Flight to Juphal, trek to Dunai (2,140m)
During the flight you can enjoy superb views of the Annapurnas, Dhaulagiris and of Manaslu before landing on the unsurfaced runway at Juphal (2,250m). It's a 3 hour trek to Dunai, where you camp for the night at 2,140m.
Day 5:Trek to Tarakot (2,537m)
The trail follows the Thulo Bheri river towards Tarakot (5 hours).
Day 6:Trek to Musi Khola (2,875m)
Day 7:Trek to Kakkot (3,210m)
Day 8 - 10:Acclimatisation
It's over 1,600m height gain from Kakkot to base camp, with only one place to camp in-between, so you need to spend a few days acclimatising. From Kakkot you'll aim to walk up to 4,000m en route to Pangi Camp, before returning to Kakkot.
Day 11 - 12:Trek to Pangi Camp (4,480m)
You'll aim to have two nights in Pangi Camp.
Day 13:Move to Dhaulagiri VII Base Camp (4,950m)
Day 14 - 25:Climb Dhaulagiri VII (7,246m)
You will use three camps above base camp; at 5,450m, 6,150m and 6,500m. You should have enough time to get acclimatised and make a summit bid in a decent weather window. Fixed ropes will be placed on some of the steeper sections of the route between Camp 1 and Camp 2, but much of the climbing will be done moving together as roped teams. Nowhere is the ground particularly steep, but after fresh snow this could make the going extremely tough. Temperatures on summit day could be as low as -40 degrees celcius.
Day 26 - 29:Return trek to Julphal
Day 30:Return flight to Kathmandu
Overnight hotel.
Day 31:At Leisure in Kathmandu
A chance to explore the bustling capital, with its beautiful temples and bustling markets. Overnight hotel.
Day 32:Fly home
Airport transfer. For those joining “land-only”, you should book your flight home today.

IMPORTANT NOTE: Every effort will be made to keep to the above itinerary, but as this is Adventure Travel in a remote mountain region, we cannot guarantee it. Weather conditions, road conditions, vehicle breakdowns, the availability of porters and the health of climbers can all contribute to changes. The Expedition Leader and our local agent will try to ensure that the trip runs according to plan, but an easy going nature will be an asset!
