Introduction
Ice climbing in Slovenia is like Canada in minature. There is a huge choice of routes of all grades and the scenery is breathtaking. The big advantages over Canada are the speed and cost of getting there, a one hour time difference and hardly any driving to get to the routes. Also, even if the ice conditions aren't great, there are other options for climbing 'mixed' Alpine routes, which previous course participants have enjoyed. Our courses are guided by local IFMGA Guides, such as Tomaz Jakofcic and Klemen Gricar. They know the area incredibly well, are flexible and therefore able to deliver an exciting week of climbing, whatever the weather might be.Based from a comfortable Slovenian hotel in Bled, this course gives six days climbing guided at 1:2 in this fascinating country on the eastern fringe of the European Alps.
It's a good idea to have already done some icefall climbing, prior to joining this course. But if you have climbed Scottish snow and ice routes or had a few visits to an indoor climbing wall, and understand basic ropework (belaying/abseiling) you can join. Climbers are paired according to their abilities and ambitions.
Typical Programme
Day 1: | Sunday. Travel to Ljubljana Airport. You will be met at the airport and transferred to Bled. Overnight hotel. |
Day 2-4: | Monday - Wednesday. Ice climbing in some of the most beautiful Slovenian mountain valleys, such as Planica, Krnica, Logarska Dolina and Vrata. Decisions will be made considering weather and ice conditions. |
Day 5-7: | Thursday - Saturday. Possible routes in higher Slovenian mountains, conditions permiting. For example, the north face of Storzic (2,132m), the north face of Dolgi hrbet (2,447m) or the north face of Begunjscica (2,060 m). Return transfer to Ljubljana, overnight hotel. |
Day 8: | Sunday. Dispersal. Breakfast will be provided on the last morning before leaving for Ljubljana Airport. |
