Introduction
Val Maira in Italy is a great place for relaxed day touring. It's quiet, there is gentle terrain and you have trees in case of bad weather. We start and finish the week in Chamonix, which is easily accessible from Geneva Airport.

Outline Programme
| Day 1: | Course participants meet at the course base at 7pm. Briefing on the week's activities in the evening. The Course Director will organise any hire equipment or boot fittings for the following morning. Overnight hotel. |
| Day 2: | A 'shakedown' day in Chamonix including a refresher in avalanche safety training. |
| Day 3: | Drive through the Mont Blanc Tunnel to Italy. Either a short ski tour in the Aosta Valley (2-3 hours up, Punte Croce) or if the weather is an issue, a morning working on off piste skiing skills and avalanche awareness at Courmayer ski area. Later - 4-hour drive to Val Maira. Overnight hotel. |
| Day 4 - 6: | 3 days of ski touring from our base in Val Maira. There are some shorter tours (600-800m ascent) which are predominantly in beautiful larch forest, these are great when the weather is bad or the avalanche hazard is high. There are also some much longer tours at the head of the valley, which feel much more alpine. Monte Viraysse (2,838m) for example involves 1,400m of ascent. The aim will be to develop your ski touring skills as the week progresses, with some more challenging skinning (steeper) and the ninja skill of uphill kick turns later in the week and how to change into boot crampons for an easy summit or terrain too steep to skin up. |
| Day 7: | A shorter itinerary before travelling back to Chamonix. Overnight hotel. |
| Day 8: | Dispersal. Breakfast will be provided on the last morning before leaving the course. |
Pre-Course Skiing Ability
Grade: 8B [ Ski Grading ]This course is designed for those who want an introduction to Ski Touring or want a relaxed day touring week. To enjoy the course and for you to take advantage of the instruction being offered, you should have some previous off piste skiing experience and you should be able to ski linked, short radius turns confidently. When you are not based overnight in the valley, you either do day tours from huts, or a short hut-to-hut tour at the end of the week, allowing you to ski with just a light pack. You should bring along your sense of humour and a desire to learn!

Travel & Venue
Fly to Geneva. A 1-hour return airport transfer to Chamonix can be booked via Jagged Globe.
Valley accommodation in Chamonix is in La Chaumière Mountain Lodge. The accommodation is provided on a twin-share (or occasionally, triple/quad), half-board basis. A single room supplement is payable should you want to have a room to yourself.
