Manaslu - a photographic journey

Written by Sarah Ingolfsdottir, May 2009

Arughat is a busy market town at the start of the trek. Here a businessman strolls purposefully through the streets.

Sarah Ingolfsdottir is a photographer who accompanied Matt Parkes during a reconnaissance of the Manaslu Circuit in April 2009. Here she shows some of her excellent images of the people they met on their journey.

Music on the move outside Arughat.

Traditional jewellery, like this stunning nose stud is a common sight in the region.

As with everywhere in Nepal, portering is a way of life.

This lady was eager to see a photo of herself on the back of my camera.

The traditional Nepalese home with the kitchen in the back and a shop at the front. Here comes the shop keeper!

It snowed when we were in Sama Goan. A father and daughter are riding back to the village as the sun finally comes out.

Lho is a popular lunch stop en route to Sama Goan. This little chap looks like he's in need of a good scrub!

Here a porter has some lunch at Namrung, a village just before the upper Buri Gandaki Valley.

The Tea House owner in Deng is a real character!

The Tea House owner in Tatopani is famous for her Buffalo Curry.

A future mountain climber?

Cleaning pots that have been used for making Chang - a popular home made alcoholic drink.

Doing the weekly wash!

A local man poses for a photo whilst collecting firewood.

Two children we met playing by the Buri Ghandaki River.

The people always seemed relaxed and at ease with the daily lives. The colours in this woman's dress seem to reflect her demeanour.

These children we met in in Machha Khola were asking whether we had any pens.

Always work to be done - carrying water from the tap in the village of Arkhet.

This is how you carry a basket when you have no load!
