Report from last week's Ski Touring Techniques

Here's what last week's course got up to and the lowdown on current snow conditions:

"My first week back on skis and what an amazing week. Chamonix has had constant snow since January and is looking magnificent, with the glaciers well filled in, the Valle Blanche is just white everywhere you look.

We had three good off piste days at the start of the week, with the visibility variable we were able to get fresh tracks on every run in the clearings, with waist deep powder and some steeper stuff through the lower treeline gullies.

Improving weather got us out to the Lammerenhutte at Leukerbad, then an ascent of the Wildstrubel, with only one other party on the hill, we had a nice white canvas on which to paint our turns.

We finished the week with the Crochure Barard traverse back in Chamonix, in perfect conditions and still with the odd bit of un-tracked fresh stuff to get a few turns in on the way down.

As one of the lads put it, "I have just ski'd more powder in 6 days than in an entire season living in a resort".

The weather has settled now and looks good for the coming week, but the temperatures are getting high, so the lower stuff will start to shift. Early starts and early finishes will be in order. This coming week should help settle the recent snow and create a really good base for touring up high, the lower stuff will start to strip out.

Off to Austria now, for a bit of Germnudelen."
