Cho Oyu team arrive in Advance Base Camp

Sean James writes from base camp on Cho Oyu:

"Over the past week we have moved from Tingri in Tibet and spent two days at Chinese Base Camp (4,850m). The day we arrived we had a short hour hike to 5,200m before returning to have dinner. We finally met up with our Nepali staff and it's great to be eating Nepali-cooked food again.

We still have a few uncomfortable stomachs after the journey from Lhasa through Tibet, but everyone is improving and we are so close to our objective Cho Oyu (8,201m). It looks amazing and we are all busy trying to look at the potential summit route from the high camp. This is still a few weeks away.

From CBC we also hiked up to 5,750m for stunning views of the face and the mountain looks very bare. Everybody looks very strong and these two days have helped us acclimatise before we moved to Intermediate and then Base Camp proper at 5,700m. The winter season has been dry, but our head Sherpa is unconcerned and has 25 years of experience behind him.

It definitely looks less snow than when I was here in 2014.

I'm also testing the Thruaya IP+ for the first time as we will move out of mobile range soon. The data connection is so quick and setting up is plug and play.

So today we arrived at ABC (5,700m). Our yaks followed us home and we are busy having showers, ripping open our bags, getting comfy in the luxurious base camp tents and making nests for the next month. Everything was set up when we arrived by our Sherpa team and we even have pillows.

Travelling through Tibet is also arduous, but necessary and arriving here has given everyone a boost. Rupert is jumping around like a 20 year old. The views are simply amazing as we are camped under Cho Oyu."
