Cho Oyu team progress to Camp 1
Sean James has sent this update from ABC:
"We are all settled into life at ABC now having been here nearly a week. We have performed out first rotation up to Camp 1 at 6,400m and returned tired but satisfied.
Expedition climbing on big mountains requires a lot of patience and weather watching. With the help of the Jagged Globe office, our weather expert in Belgian and Thuraya we have forecasts and models sent everyday both long term and short term.
When we arrived the mountain and glaciers were bare indicating a dry season. We have now noticed a pattern of afternoon snow both at ABC and higher up on Cho Oyu. Some teams are hoping to summit within the next few days and we wish them luck. Everyday in the mess tent we scrutinise the weather printouts and try to look ahead. On the 12th looks like we are expecting 42cm of snow at all elevations on the mountain.
Forecasts can change but this afternoon we will discuss if it is possible to put a rotation in up to Camp 2 before the big dump, returning to ABC then sitting out the bad weather before considering a summit push. Otherwise we face a long wait at ABC. As always there are many options. The chatter around base camp is similar and every team is walking around comparing data and looking for ideas.
Our cook is supplying us with freshly cooked pastries and bread everyday and I hope this wont sway the argument to stay in ABC longer. Although he just told us he has more lamb shanks for the next time we are down. He obviously knows how mountaineers are motivated.
For now, everyone is fine and our mixed team of US, Canadian, UK and Dutch are finally starting to understand their respective sense of humors."
