Cholatse team update
Expedition leader, Matt Parkes, sent us an update from Cholatse last Friday (our apologies for the slow update!)
"We have a strong team of 4 climbers, 1 leader and 3 of Nepal's finest climbing Sherpas ready to take on the challenge of climbing the mighty Cholatse. After a short meeting in Kathmandu the team made an early departure to Lukla Airport. A bit of check-in chaos and we boarded the flight ready for departure. No matter how many times you take the flight to Lukla, every flight is as exhilarating as the first! A quick cup of tea and we set out on the first part of the journey, our trek to Cholatse base camp.
It was obvious from the beginning that we had a very strong team this year. Despite numerous requests from me to walk slowly the team still reached each day's destination in record time.
As I write this (Friday 27 October) we are currently in Machermo for our second night, a day ahead of schedule. This morning we set out on the usual acclimatisation walk, following a ridge running south alongside Machermo. The team set off at the usual enthusiastic pace, everyone looking strong and enjoying great views of Cholatse in the background. We soon reached 5000m and not content with this we pressed on to the rock summit above which offered some interesting scrambling at 5250m, eventually gaining the summit!
A great few days with a strong team, all looks good for our attempt on the mountain.
Tomorrow we set off for base camp where the real fun begins."
