Success on Elbrus!
Expedition leader, Neal Short, reports from Elbrus that all 10 members who set out last night from North Huts reached the summit of the west peak at 1pm today. The conditions during the night were "terrific", but it was a long ascent. Neal said it was clear on the summit, however, the weather then deteriorated and there were challenging gales and spindrift on the descent. He described it as "a big day out indeed" and said that the team were "shattered". They are up at 0500 tomorrow for the walk to base camp and will continue to the hotel in Piatagorsk.
Neal's group managed to make their ascent in a short weather window, using their spare weather day to do so. It had been really windy on Sunday during the day and high winds were forecast to continue, so the team waited until Monday night/Tuesday morning for their chance, when the wind was due to drop. So, a well-planned and executed summit night from one of our most experienced leaders; indeed, Neal completes his "7 Summits" with this ascent. Congratulations to the team!
We have 3 more teams this season, so look out for news of how they get on...
