One day prior to departure, the FCO issued a statement advising against travel to Irian Jara - only to withdraw it less than 24 hours later. After many phone calls and much deliberation, we decided to go. Robin Beadle and his small team of three climbers arrived in the village of Ilaga, having flown in via Bali and Jakarta. Before they even had a chance to ready themselves for the trek in to the mountain, disturbance between the local people and police force meant that they had to leave. This was clearly a huge disappointment for everyone concerned and emphasises the difficulties of reaching the most elusive of the Seven Summits.« Previous report | »
