Stok Kangri 23 July - 13 August
Written by Leader Ron Holt, December 2000
Ron Holt reported that the weather in Ladakh was more mixed than usual with considerably more precipitation than expected. This unsettled nature to the weather pattern resulted in a remarkable flash flood around midnight on day 3 of the acclimatisation trek. Fortunately everyone managed to get to higher ground in time but two tents and many items of personal equipment were lost in amongst the mud and rock which came cascading down the valley.
After a day's rest the group returned to Leh by the same route before embarking on their trek to Stok Kangri base camp. There then followed a short but more stable weather pattern accompanied by a sharp increase in the number of expedition groups both at base camp and at advanced base camp. However, with only one day's rest the group set off from base camp during the early hours of 7 August. The whole team; Richard Smith, Bill Roberts, Stan da Prato and Ron reached the summit after only 5 ½ hours, accompanied by their Sirdar Angchuk and two climbing Sherpas. Everyone was rewarded for their hard efforts with spectacular views from the summit before returning safely to base camp well before midday.
