Stok Kangri - 22 Jul to 12 Aug '06
Written by Leader Iain Peter, August 2006
At 8.30am on 6 August all six members of the Jagged Globe Stok Kangri expedition reached the summit of a very snowy Stok Kangri (6,121m). The ascent was completed despite unseasonably bad weather with heavy snowfalls, flooding, swollen rivers and gale force winds affecting much of the Ladakh region.
The team experienced considerable difficulty in establishing base camp due to the high river levels and the poor weather meant that the decision to attempt the summit was only made at 2.00am on the morning of the 6th.
Members left base camp at 3.00am and traversed the approach glacier in deep snow. Crampons and ropes were used by everyone above 5,300m and the knee deep snow and zero visibility made for much hard work!
However, the absence of a summit view in no way dampened either the the sense of achievement or the fun of this successful ascent.
All members were back at ABC by 12 noon.
The expedition is now enjoying a well earned rest in New Delhi before returning home.
Exped members: Mike Anderson (UK), George Carlyle (Aus), Terry Delbridge (UK), Alex Hardie (UK), Patricia Hardie (UK) and Iain Peter (UK).
