Gasherbrum II 2001

Written by Leader David Hamilton, August 2001

This was the third successful Jagged Globe expedition to Gasherbrum II (8,035m), having run expeditions in 1998 and 1999. One team member commented that they were "a close knit and motivated team", and emphasised the benefit of expedition leader, David Hamilton's "unrivalled knowledge and experience" of the mountain. Five out of seven members made the summit on Monday 9 July along with David and two Pakistani High Altitude Porters. The strategy of getting into base camp early and being among the first to establish camps on the mountain worked well, enabling them to be the first expedition of the 17 attempting the climb this season to top out. This was David's third time on the summit of GII, a distinction held by only one other person and curiously, summit day has been the same date - 9 July - on all three occasions. David reported that the climbing was harder this year with technical difficulties of up to Alpine AD encountered on some sections of the route. The summer season continues in the Karakoram with a Jagged Globe team currently on Spantik (7,027m) and hoping to repeat last year's success when five team members reached the summit by the SE Ridge. « Previous report | »
