Huascaran 2002

Written by Leader Deborah Laugharne, August 2002

Despite the condition of Huascaran preventing the team from summitting, the expedition was a success in many ways. Everybody acclimitised well during the Santa Cruz trek and all members reached the summit of Pisco (5,752m) to be rewarded with fantastic views on a windy but beautifully clear morning.

After close inspection of our intended route on Huascaran, it became clear that there was a lot of debris from recent avalanches and serac collapse. Some of this debris was as close as 100m above base camp. We therefore decided to change our arrangements and try and climb nearby Chopicalqui (6,345m) instead. After setting up a new base camp, we used two camps at 4,900m and 5,300m. Despite less settled weather, three team members reached the summitin clear weather with low winds.« | »
