Mera and Island Peak - 13 Apr to 12 May '18
Written by Leader Simon Verspeak, May 2018
Difficult conditions persisted in Nepal this spring with a period of daily snow and rain. Thankfully the mornings were generally clear and sunny, meaning early starts were the name of the day. Ten days of beautiful trekking led us to the base of Mera Peak and a successful ascent by 8 members of the team, 3 sherpas and myself. Unfortunately further snowfall preventing us from crossing into the Hongku Valley and over the Ampha Laptsa Pass into the Khumbu. Instead, we retraced our steps for a few days before crossing the Zatrwa La back to Lukla. Here several members opted for civilisation (and eventually onwards to home) whilst the rest of us continued up the Khumbu, past Namche Bazaar and onto to Thame. After the primitive comforts of the approach to Mera we enjoyed a few days of civilised trekking complete with coffee stops. Above Namche the trail was quieter and we ascended up to a view point high on Sundur Peak for an 8000m peak vista.
